antonio bencivenni portale montone inGate, 1519

As the central inscription points out, the gate was realised by Antonio Bencivenni da Mercatello from the Marches, who followed the model of a gate built in 1501 for the Collegio del Cambio in Perugia. The rose windows, the dolphins, the trident and the shell are decorative motifs which were greatly used by the artists of the Renaissance who took inspiration from the Greek and Roman sculpture. The mountain with six peaks where the Cross stands out and the naked arm of Christ crossing the arm of St. Francis covered by the tunic are all symbols of the Franciscans.
